TOLEDO, OH — Today, Three Pines Production Company LLC of Toledo, Ohio released their documentary The Big Problem In The Great Lakes. The film tells the tale of the Toledo Water Crisis of 2014 as well as exploring the causes of the algal blooms that formed in western Lake Erie that forced the City of Toledo to declare its tap water unsafe to use.
The Big Problem In The Great Lakes features residents and experts discussing their experiences and proposed solutions to the problems with Lake Erie algal blooms that led to the Water Crisis. Kim Axe is a local resident and activist, who’s experiences the film is based around, while Dr. Greg Dick of the University of Michigan, Toledo Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz, and small family farmers Dennis and Tony Ruffing provide additional expertise on the subject.
“My hope in making this film is to spark a wider discussion on water quality issues that impact us all,” said Mike Balonek, the film’s director and Three Pines Production Company owner. He continues, “As global temperatures rise, Lake Erie is the canary in the coal mine when it comes to issues with toxic algal blooms. If our leaders can act now to better regulate the farm runoff that causes these algal blooms, we may be able to head off a larger disaster in the future.”

A public showing of the film will be a part of the Justice For East Palestine Residents And Workers Coalition conference at Kent Branch Library on Saturday morning starting at 9:30. The conference will include speakers from other disaster areas including East Palestine, Ohio, where a train carrying toxic chemicals derailed and caught on fire last year.
